    Description

Inside the walls of this antebellum farm house is the original pre-revolutionary war frontier log cabin, constructed by first generation Irish immigrants, the Rev. Samuel and Mary Duff. The cabin logs can be viewed at two locations in the home. This cabin served as both a home to the Duff's as well as a refuge to pioneer travelers along the well known Native American footpath, (the Virginia Creeper Trail) They traveled from the settled lands of North Carolina over Whitetop Mountain, through the settlement of Wolf Hills, which would become Black's Fort, present day Abingdon. and on through into the "western front" Some 3 generations later, in the 1830's. Thomas Jefferson Duff (a grandson) was born and raised on the property. He and his bride Ann Elizabeth Ketron Duff constructed a "large and architecturally pleasing "farmhouse". Inside the farmhouse Duff preserved his beloved birthplace utilizing it as a dining room. An artesian spring still flows year round, even in times of severe drought. The spring provided drinking water for the community for many generations. Upon construction of the steam engine railroad in the 1900's, the train made daily stops for water from the spring. Throughout it's life the Duff House has been widely known and has hosted thousands of guests. For several seasons it served as a boarding house for railroad construction workers, logging companies, pioneer travelers, and sojourners. It served as a Civil War hospital where both Northern and Southern soldiers were treated. Over the past 15 years the house has been lovingly and painstakingly renovated. Many modern amenities have been added while preserving it's rustic quaintness and charm.
